CBC Newsworld going for shock value now?

I'm watching CBC Newsworld where they are boasting about a new morning format. Clearly this new format is taking an American news style approach. For example, the lead in for a story about gun violence, mainly the city's new gun amnesty program went like this:

"...To Toronto now, in what was once considered one of the safest cities in the world to live, it's now not uncommon to hear someone say they heard gunshots in their neighborhood last night".

What a complete and utter load of bullshit. This fearmongering plays well on Fox or City TV, but I would hold the CBC to a higher standard. To anyone who lives in Toronto, hearing a gunshot while hiking in the forest is more likely to happen than in the city (and we all know how often the average Torontonian goes hiking!).

Yes, gun violence in Toronto is out of control. It's a gang problem, not the freakin' wild west. The police need to do more, as does the government (municipal and provincial). Maybe we need a hardcore crackdown in high crime areas. Maybe we need a cop on every corner. Maybe we need to let community leaders get the support they need to help reach kids with the guns. I don't have the answers. Scaring the shit out of people is not the answer, its the way to make people angry. And that'll lead to rash decisions.
