News from the front (or back)

The Daily Nar, currently your dial-up correspondent, checking in! Sadly, didn't get to make the trek up to the mighty Sudbury, but down to Woodstock instead. Seems things have gone to heck in a hurry in my absense. Scary stuff to be sure.

I'm adding a link to return the favor to Derision 2006, get clicking. Should be back in Hogtown in the next few days, so posting should return to it's usual high calibre soon.

Vacation time for The Daily Nar

While I'm sure you've all been keeping score, but just in case you haven't The Daily Nar has over 573 posts in the last 9 months. That's a lot. In fact, the only real break we've had was for a week back in August...

So The Daily Nar will be taking a short winter hiatus starting now. Posts will continue, albeit a little more sporatically until after the New Year.

Just remeber what I said in the Daily Nar Pregame Show: the election will come down to social spending, not tax cuts. Whoever has a better plan for spending money on the social pillars of the Canadian federal system will win. People are sick of watching our publically funded programs rot away because of "fiscal responsibility", whatever that means.

Anyways, take care and I'll try to post something about the debates shortly; and maybe another New Music Friday. I wouldn't hold my breath for another Podcast anytime soon though, as those things are hard and so far I haven't gotten any feedback to indicate that the 2-3 hours it takes to pull one together is even worth my time.

The US captured al-Zarqawi (but let him go)

"Holy shit" is about all I can say about that. Billions of dollars, hundreds of thousands of lives, dozens of executed captives. Has anyone ever heard of a photograph? I mean, this is so apropos for the situation in Iraq it makes me sick.

Rodney Mullen is Still a God

DevilDucky - Rodney Mullen is Still a God

George and Stephen, sittin' in a tree...

I just wanted to post this quote from the Washington Times the CBC aired tonight. Seems that (at least according to the Post) that Georgie would like nothing better than to gain a Robin to his Batman on Terrorism, and Harper is the boy wonder he's hoping for:

"Harper... is pro-free trade, pro-Iraq war, anti-Kyoto, and socially conservative. Move over Tony Blair: If elected, Mr. Harper will quickly become Mr. Bushes new best friend internationally and the poster boy for his ideal foreign leader."

That statement is laden with so many things that piss me off its amazing. Not only does it read like a list of reasons why anyone with half a brain SHOULDN'T vote for Stephen Harper, it proves one thing: George Bush Jr. thinks Canada is a joke. Moreover, he sees lesser countries as Extreme Makeover candidates where he can force his rediculously retroactive view of the world on everyone else.

BMX park along the waterfont?

Man I hope this goes ahead. Tomorrow evening (Wednesday, December 14) Councillor Sylvia Watson is holding a community meeting to discuss the idea of building a BMX course at Marilyn Bell Park along the waterfront. It takes place at 7:00 pm, Wednesday December 14 at Masaryk Cowan Community Centre (at Queen and Cowan, a few blocks west of Dufferin in Parkdale). For more information call 416-392-7919.

Popular toys of the last 100 years

Here is an interesting article about popular christmas presents since 1900. I think they got the "present" section a little wrong though; as I don't see as many kids rolling around on a Razor scooter. I guess they are restricting the definition of "toy" to non-electronic things.

With the exception of Candy Land, I have owned every popular toy since 1939. I wonder what that means?

New Music Friday Vol. 38

Blah! Maintenence workers in the house today means the podcast will be delayed, sorry. In fact, the NMF will be short today, as there just hasn't been that much happening:

- Checked out the new Stokes album, Impressions of Earth. Some of the songs take a more aggressive approach to what you'd expect from the band, but on the whole it plays out much like Room on Fire. However, many tracks come across with a more defined 80's feel, like the band has been listening to a lot of The Cars whilst writing this. Samples are available one their website (thestrokes.com) or check out the new single, Juicebox, at myspace.com/thestrokes

- The Epitaph records website has videos! And some really good ones too!! And you can download them!!! NOFX, The Descendents, Pennywise, Rancid, All, The Weakerthans, Bad Religion and a lot more. http://epitaph.com/videos

- The Plug independent music awards are now holding voting on their website. Head to plugawards.com and vote now (and yes, there are Canadian bands on the list)

CBGB's lives (for another year)!

Microsoft's CEO will have to shop for his Xbox

Stuff like this, to me, is surreal. Talk about taking the corporate culture to its most extreme. I bet a shoe maker would ALWAYS make sure his children had shoes. What the hell is point of being the CEO of one of the world's largest companies if you can't possibly get any perks? Report as income they say, so? That's like $400 - not much to a guy who probably makes 20 million a year.

PS. I'm listening to the new Darkness album right now, and decidedly NOT diggin' it.

Fark's Tradgic Day in History

Today is definitely a bummer day, here is what some Farkers have uncovered about things that have happened on this day:

- Death of John Lennon infront of his apartment
- Pantera's Dimebad Darrrel murdered at a live concert
- The Immacualte Conception's dogmatic recognition
- Spice Girls win the Billboard Music Awards album of the year
- Death of George Boole, inventor of Boolean Algebra
- National Motorists ASsociation (US) wins case ending 55 mile per hour speed limit
- Slim Pickens dies
- Elvis did a lot: album "Elivs" #1 (1956), Fabian visited Elvis at Graceland and lent him his pants when Elivs ripped his demonstrating karate (1960), Elivs special aired on NBC (1968)
- Ann Coulter born (yikes!)
- Stone Cold Steve Austin loses intercontinental WWF title to The Rock (what?)

How to Generate Buzz for your band online!

NPR : To Generate Buzz, Clap Your Hands on the 'Net!

Update on the Dillinger release

"The Dillinger Escape Plan's upcoming DVD outing will in fact not be a live-oriented effort and instead will be more of a companion piece to their latest album, Miss Machine. It will feature interviews with the band and the albums producer, plus the official videos for the tracks "Setting Fire To Sleeping Giants", "Unretrofied" and "Panasonic Youth", among other things. A tentative February 21st release date via Relapse is being planned."

Video Game TV Show from 1984

Remeber the PET? If yes (or no) check this out!

To party or not to party?

So I was at this guy's party yesterday, along with this fella. Nice party, lots of food. I was even asked by the man himself to volunteer. Still trying to decide whether I should. Probably will though, as Joe has come across as a pretty nice guy in person, and I have to say I'm proud of some of the things he's gotten through parliment.

CBC News: Harper promises guaranteed wait times for health services

Hey, I gotta question: How the hell do you plan to magically reduce wait times to something near manageable when you plan to cut taxes? I love 'guarantees'. Here's a rule: If someone makes you a "guarantee" before they actually know the reality of the situation, you can pretty much disregard their statements as BS. If a guarantee is all it takes, then make me Prime Minister because I guarantee you:

- A magic carpet outside your door to gently whisk you away, traffic free, to your high-paying, low tax-ed job
- A highly trained and qualified babysitter on call 24hrs a day
- A "wicked" military (note that "wicked" is in fact a level of military proficiency under my government)
- A winning lotto ticket at least once in your life

New Music Friday #38

Nothing new to report this week, except that the new Podcast is done and being uploaded now! Look for a link to appear in your iTunes and here by tomorrow morning. Some great songs, and I think I figured out how to make the volume levels a little more consistent (duh!). Prepare to be impressed!

Sorbara family business deals probed

Here's another article that shouldn't be overlooked today either. Details have been released about the sustance of the raid on Greg Sorbara's business, and his own personal files; but no information yet on why he himself was targeted.

Pembina Report on Ontario's Energy Plan

Sure to be discarded faster than a pair of Harper-brand assless chaps, a report that was released today by the Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development sharply criticizes Ontario's Energy Plan. The report states that Ontario could save up to 40% more energy costs by moving to more sustainable alternatives, but the province does not seem interested in pursuing new ways of generating power. There's a lot of other interesting points, listed in the link below, with a link to download the whole report at the bottom of the page.

P.S. There was a magazine article a year or two ago that talked about why Ontario is locked into a financial vicious circle and needs to spend billions on refurbishing our reactors to actually STOP losing money. If anyone has it, please email.

World Aids Day

Today is World AIDS Day (#8), and so far its been a utter failure where it matters.

BBC NEWS | Africa | Controversy clouds World Aids Day

A lot of GuSTo in the air

So everyone is talking about Stephen's big idea to cut the GST by 2%, then a higher rate phased in over a number of years. Do I think this is crazy? Yes. Like it says in the article "a family of four earning $60,000 a year would pay about $400 less in taxes". But, the previous sentence, to me, is the most important. $4.5 billion would be removed from the system. That's nothing to laugh at. And that amount being yanked from the system would go up if Stephen has anything to do with it.

Remember a bright-eyed, bushy tailed and not so silver-tongued Premier named Mike Harris. He TOLD people that if they want tax breaks, he's give 'em to us. Remember how that worked out (been to a hospital lately?). Taking money out of the federal system when the federal system is ready to collapse on any number of fronts - heathcare, daycare, basic infrastructure, Kyoto compliance, etc. - is a STUPID IDEA. What we need is a more comprehensive, open and honest program of spending on social projects! Canada has this unique little quirk: we love our welfare system, yet we get pissed of when we find out we actually have to pay for it in order to for it to work.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't agree with Martin either. I think a reduction personal income tax is 'same crap, different pile' reactionary politicking.

I really don't want taxes to become the central point of this election. Not only is it irrelevant when we consistently put up multi-billion dollar surpluses year after year, but it excludes what I think are real issues. It also pushes the fringe parties out further where they don't have a chance to inject some real issues into the debate. But hey, that's just me, and no one reads this anyways...
CBC News: Harper vows to cut GST
