A Gamers' Manifesto

Having worked for a video game website a few years ago, this cracked me right up.

A Gamers' Manifesto

Welcome to Canada - Home of the scandal.

So there's been no post for a few days, sorry. No new music, but there will be this week.

Anyways! Think that the adscam was just a blip on an otherwise flat, praries-like history of federal government in Canada. Think again. The CBC has a great little page dedicated to scandals past. Enjoy!

Oh, thanks to everyone who showed up at Sneaky Dee's on Saturday night. It's all good when half of Sudbury shows up...

This NOT what its about.

Some 300,000 Chinese citizens are being displaced, illegally (but what is law in China?), some being jailed. Why?

For the 2008 Olympics.

Yes, the games meant to promote peace between rival city-states in ancient times, where warriors would lay down their arms and instead compete in feats of atheltisism. An event that today marks the comming together of the whole world to share in the joy of friendly compet... oh who am I kidding?! Today, the Olympics are about $$$. Who has the deepest pockets gets both the games and the rights to broadcast, the right to have your little logo everywhere for the whole planet to see. That's what it's about.

China beat out Canada to host these games. Many critics at that time hoped that hosting the games would force many of the human rights abuses in China to come to light, and perhaps force a change. Well, I guess not. I seem to remeber certain groups rallying against Toronto hosting because of our homelessness issues. We do not have 300,000 new homeless on our streets. At least we didn't put any of our people there intentionally (althought I'm sure that point could also be argued).

Do we, as a people, care? Nope. So long as the Chinese people that make the cheap shit products we buy at Sprawl*Mart can still get to work, we're good.

Shame on all of us.

Grand Avenue Project

I guess this isn't really interesting unless you've been to Los Angeles. The weird part about this city is that its not really possible to pick out the downtown part of it, it sort of lacks a "core". Well, not anymore. Massive build projects seem to be the rage in the US over the last couple of years. Are they helping?

The 7" Club

I knew about this earlier but I tottaly forgot to report it. NoFX, beloved punk rock icons, have started a club whereby $60 gets you a shiny new 7" record of new tracks each month! Cool no? Go here to hear some new tunes from one of my all-time favorite punk rock bands (back off, fanboys!).
Fat Wreck Chords

Uh-Oh.

No rest for the wicked, eh? Just when you think the Liberals may get one tiny second of breathing room... bang! They get hit again. I really don't understand how the government can continue to function at this point. I'm really trying my hardest to stay away from commenting on the same thing every other Tom, Jean and Warren are talking about right now, but some things just need to be said, even by me:

"Hey Paul, I think you're pretty much f*cked. Quit before you get indicted."

New Music Friday Vol. 13

Long weekend Friday is upon us, so let's get this over with and go drinkin' (at 10 AM!).

I found two great songs, thanks to a rare viewing of Much Music's Loud show on Saturday nights. The first, The Worst is Yet to Come by Still Remains is pretty cool. Normally I'm not a big fan of this kind of music, but I liked the video and the song has grown on me. Kind of like a more metal version of 7 Angels 7 Plagues.

Underoath, a [gulp] Christian metal band from Florida, have a great new track Redefining Your Own Exit. It's nothing really special, just a catchy tune.

Someone has decided to dig up the Nar's past, and post some of his old tunes on Myspace. I found this last night, and it made me smile a little. It's hard to imagine it's been almost two years since This Time of Year went the way of the Dodo Bird. Good songs, good guys. Tye and Rob now play in Arkata, and Matt plays with The Video Dead. Adam is working with the old Trigger Happy Alums, and I'm not sure what Justin is up to.Wish we were still at it. Where does the time go?

The Real Loser in this... Peter's Heart

Ah. Poor Peter. His heart's feeling "a little banged up" right now. I can't help but feel reminded of that episode of Seinfeld were George finds out his old girlfriend has since "switched sides". Pardon the pun, as it were.

Seriously though, could you imagine your girlfriend pulling this sort of acrobatics and not even letting you know beforehand? Talk about a Dear John! The picture from the CBC website says it all:

"Ouch."-Peter MacKay

So, in the days ahead, amidst all the political wrangling, the backstabbing (or "frontstabbing" as it's been called) and edge-of-your-seat budget votes, lets not forget who the real victim was today: The Conservatives? No. Stephen Harper's political future? No, although Stockwell Day could start warming up the seat beside him. It's Peter MacKay's heart. The most precious political commodity there is. Clearly, he was so blinded by love that he could not see the ambition in B-Lindy's eyes was not for their relationship to "go to the next level".

Thanks Warren. Here's my entry...

People don't cover their ears for cheering, you know.

New Music Friday Vol. 12?

So there was no new music post last week, and this week is looking like slim pickin's. The last couple weeks just haven't seen a lot of movement on the music scene. Here's the scraps:

- The WPP from Vancouver, who shared the stage with Arkata at this years North By Northeast; have decided to take a break. Shame, I liked this band.

- This week, I discovered that a DVD Audio version of Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come has been out since last year! I foolishly discovered it after reading the Moneen Myspace page. I will be placing my order today for Refused in 5.1 goodness. For those of you who haven't heard The Shape, you are sadly depriving yourself of one of the best, and in my opinion most influencial punk/hardcore, albums ever.

- Ran into my old friend Yas from Dead Celebrity Status this week at the movies. He was there to see XXX State of The Union soley to hear his band's song on the movie - which I thought was funny. Check out Dead Celeb here, they even managed to get Joss Stone on one of their tracks.

Is today the day?

Does the tower of Liberal power finally come tumbling down? You know, it amazes me that the Liberal party has gone from "The Big Red Machine" to "The Red Menace" so quickly. Not a few years ago, the Libs could have shaken off this "scandal" and continued on unscathed - at least in the public eye. Backroom dealings and secret handshakes would have kept this little ditty out of papers, and out of voters minds. Now, every little thing seems poised to kill the sitting parliament.

But I have to agree with the vox populi at the moment, enough already. Sh*t or get off the pot, as it were. If we're going to go to an election, let's get it on. If not, shut up and get back to work. If in fact we do have writ mania, its entirely possible that the Nar will be helping out a political party (I've already been asked). Now that would be fun!

...In other news - tomorrow is another "big" day for Ontario. That's right, it's provincial budget time baby! Break out the party hats and plastic cups, because this one's gonna be... well, more or less that status quo? That's what I think. Sure, all the papers will be telling you that services will be cut, and "service fees" will go up, but I doubt it. Call me a middle of the road-ist, but I think that the government has realized that:

A) It's in big trouble financially, and it doesn't matter who's fault it is, just that they've got to fix it fast; and
b) Adding to that trouble - and by that I mean translating it down to the average tax payer - is a political bullet to the head.

The Grits will continue to work towards their 5 priorities within current fiscal restraints, which are considerable but probably don't have to get any worse at this point. I guess we'll have to see.

Tune in tomorrow to see if my powers of prognostication are indeed with the paper they were printed on when I bought my diploma over the interweb!

Chappelle Show Done?

I for one find this show to be hilarious and crass as hell, just like Family Guy. I hope everything works out. It's been hinted that Dave has got a severe case of writers block, but lets hope that's all it is.

Culture Jamming Anne Coulter

There was a video clip floating around the internets not too long ago, where someone had edited together Anne's statements reaffirming her love and affection for Canada. If anyone knows a site that hosts it, email us and I'll post the link.

This idiot is the physical manifestation of why so many people hate the USA. I'm happy to read reports of people f*cking with her any time. She absolutely, positively deserves it.

Alabama trying to ban "Gay Books"

There's a bill in the legislature in Alabama right now that hopes to ban all books that make reference to gay lifestyles. Not onlyis that both stupid and insane, but the bill is poorly written, it threatens to ban just about any book that doesn't talk about sex ONLY between a married couple. Cream reunites

I don't think a lot of you out there will really care, but the old 60's band Cream (Eric Clapton's band) have reunited for a small tour. What I find most interesting, is that this band is considered legendary in rock history, but they were only together for two years. These days, two years won't even get you a gig at the 360.
